On Sunday's Meet the Press -- even more than usual -- it was not the questions Russert asked but the questions he didn't that revealed the most. Because what was missing from Meet the Press was, well, the press. Specifically, Judy Miller and the New York Times. There wasn't a single mention of either during the roundtable of journalists discussing the week's news. Why was Tim so shy about bringing them up? Because of his own role in Plamegate? Or because his first loyalty is to the establishment of which the New York Times is a part rather than to the truth and to the public?

Crunching the Numbers: $1.2 million seems like an awful lot of money to pay a journalist with an iffy reputation whose cause never really became very celebre. A publishing insider crunched the numbers for me: "In order to recoup that kind of advance," the insider told me, "they'd have to sell 300,000 copies at $27 a book. Ain't gonna happen..."

The Times once promised "to continue aggressive reporting aimed at setting the record straight" about the paper's coverage of the Iraq WMD story. But will any of its reporters actually take up that challenge and dig deeper into what went on between Miller and Libby?

From what Dobson told the New York Times, it sounds like the information about Miers was given in confidence, so maybe he feels he can't break his promise not to tell. So here's my proposal to make things easier: since they're all the rage these days, the White House should grant a waiver of confidentiality to Dobson to put him more "at liberty" to share with the rest of us, and with the Senate, what information made him come to like Ms. Miers so much.

If you thought President Bush's second term was running out of gas, you should have watched Meet the Press Sunday. This, my friends, is what running out of gas looks like. Judging by Tim's questions, the biggest issue facing our country right now -- a country currently at war, a country about to undergo an unprecedented rebuilding effort, a country with historic levels of debt, a country with an administration that's imploding from its own hubris, incompetence, and cronyism -- is what "the fallout" will be on the 2006 election.

For the all-time example of a man whistling past the graveyard, check out Bill Keller’s jaw dropping comments this past Friday at the Association of National Advertisers conference in Phoenix. Keller must have downed a double dose of the Times Kool-Aid before taking the stage... What a difference 11 days -- and a suddenly discovered set of notes -- can make. After her first grand jury appearance, Judy Miller preened for the cameras triumphantly and talked about going to jail for her principles. There were no such remarks after today’s appearance. Indeed, exiting the courthouse after her testimony, neither Miller nor Bob Bennett had anything to say.

UPDATE: Judge Lifts Contempt of Court Citation for Miller. The Times is now free to give its readers, as Bill Keller has promised, “the most thorough story we can.”

Rarely has so much been riding on a single article. But the Times finds itself facing a vexing Catch-22. In order to quell the rising newsroom rebellion, it needs to produce an article that tells the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth about what Bill Keller called Miller's "entanglement with the White House leak investigation." But how can it do that without going against its own unwavering editorial line in support of Miller?
