The honor of being included among Time's 100 of "the world's most influential people" doesn't belong to me. It belongs squarely to the Huffington Post community -- our talented team, our amazing stable of bloggers (over 700 strong), our advertisers, and our readers whose clicks and comments have been the lifeblood of HuffPost, and fueled whatever success and influence we may have enjoyed. Time's recognition is really a tribute to the influence of the blogosphere, which has leveled the playing field between the media haves and the media have-only-a-laptop-and-an- Internet-connection crowd. In the process, it has become a vital source of news and opinion -- forever altering and democratizing the way we gather, process, and share information.

Taking a page from The Colbert Report's signature segment, the Word this week most definitely was "Swift". Not as in "Boat", but as in "Jonathan". Stephen Colbert's knockout appearance at the White House Correspondents' Dinner, delivering ballsy truths done up as truthiness, was savage satire in the great Swiftian tradition -- punchlines with a purpose. But in this case, it wasn't Irish children on the menu; it was George W. Bush and the Washington press corps being stewed, roasted, baked, and boiled. The performance -- and the MSM's handling of it -- lit up the HuffPost blog. Don't miss the Colbert takes -- pro and con -- of Craig Crawford, Marty Kaplan, Robert A. A sure sign of the coming GOP apocalypse: the party faithful are starting to play the God card. Yes, when all else fails -- with Iraq a debacle, your domestic agenda a nonstarter, and your lame-duck leader pronouncing the catching of a big fish the high point of his presidency -- it's time to look heavenward for political redemption. The Republicans have had their Come to Jesus Moment and, as usual, decided... well, to come to Jesus. Again. We've seen this movie before -- and the ending has all too frequently resulted in Democrats being Left Behind on Election Day.

I've been thinking a lot about birth and death today. Birth because this is HuffPost's one year anniversary. And Death because of the new Vanity Fair profile of Dick Cheney, which offers two very different pictures of how the vice president regards death. On the one hand, we learn that Cheney always brings a chemical-biological HazMat suit with him wherever he goes. Clearly a sign of a man concerned about meeting his maker. (No, not Halliburton.) Yet the article also describes a lunch at which Cheney, a man who has had four heart attacks, cuts his steak into bite-size pieces and proceeds to salt each side of each piece. Sounds more like a man daring Death to take his best shot. I can just picture Cheney in Bergman's "The Seventh Seal." Death arrives to play chess. "Go fuck yourself!" says Cheney.

I've been doing a lot of traveling -- and a lot of reading on planes -- recently. Among the best reads was The Defining Moment, Jonathan Alter's new book on FDR. It's a portrait of authentic leadership grounded in experience and conviction rather than focus-group approved positions and soundbytes. Elements sorely missing from today's political landscape. FDR inspired us to plant victory gardens; JFK asked us to ask not; George Bush asked us to go shopping.

The opportunity was too good to pass up. A chance for a little private time with the Secretary of State. Girl to Girl. The scene was Monday night's party toasting this year's Time 100. But my mingle moment of choice was with Condoleezza Rice. Here was my opportunity to ask her one of the many burning questions I have for her. But reality quickly dawned on me: caution is so hardwired into Rice's DNA that the chance of her saying something even remotely off-message was less likely than the automated voice mail system in Tom Tancredo's office giving you the option to "Press 2 to continue in Spanish." So I decided to ask her the one question to which I honestly and truly had no idea what the answer would be...

He walked up to that podium a basic cable cult figure, and came back a political comedy legend. Start carving that satiric Mt. Rushmore: Swift, Twain, Bruce... Colbert.

Questions of the week: Can Bush's numbers go any lower? Is Tony Snow already melting? Is Gen. Hayden the second coming of Harriet Miers? Is another Cold War coming or was Putin just blowing hot air? Two polls; two utterly contradictory results. According to the Washington Post, the majority of Americans are okay with the NSA's massive collection of our phone records. According to Newsweek, the majority of Americans are not. But even if we knew with absolute certainty that 100 percent of the American people were cool with the NSA keeping a permanent record of every single phone call made by every single American -- that still doesn't make it okay. Or legal. People can pick up their phones and vote Chris Daughtry off American Idol. But they can't pick up the phone and vote off the Fourth Amendment. At least, not yet.

Last night, I attended the premiere of An Inconvenient Truth, the powerful new global warming documentary featuring an impassioned and surprisingly humorous Al Gore. After the screening, as I watched him interact with well-wishers, he radiated commitment and confidence. Here was a man truly comfortable in his own skin. And it got me thinking how unlike his old self -- and the vast majority of our would-be leaders -- he has become. You could smell the fear on the Gore of 2000. Just as you could smell it on Kerry in 2004. And it's the same sickening scent that Hillary Clinton is wearing today: Eau de Don't Let Me Screw Up and Flush My Chances Down the Toilette.

Buoyed by the latest polls, Democrats are already starting to sound like incumbents, and incumbents are by nature hyper-cautious. READ MORE

It's Good to Be King (and it Ain't Bad to be Vice President Either!)

Question of the week: which was met with more derision from critics, The Da Vinci Code or President Bush's proposal to use the National Guard to help secure our border with Mexico? The topper to Bush's proposal was Don Rumsfeld's assertion that putting troops on the border will "provide real-life training" for the National Guard. Real life? Only if those coming across the border looking for a better life start issuing stop-loss orders or using Improvised Explosive Devices. By the way, I was considering writing this post in Greek, but I didn't want Sen. Inhofe to think I was discouraging national unity. So instead I'll just say: here's the Sunday Roundup.

Fearlessness has a new name -- and it's Jean Sara Rohe. As you no doubt know by now, she is the young woman who bravely -- and with dignity -- confronted Sen. John McCain during his appearance at the commencement ceremonies of New York's New School on Friday, disturbed by his support for the war in Iraq. With McCain seated just a few feet away, Rohe said, "The senator does not reflect the ideals upon which this university was founded," drawing cheers from the crowd. Can you imagine the courage that took? Not just to speak truth to power, but to do so in such a personal and public way?

Even with Tom Hanks, Eddie Murphy, Bruce Willis, and Halle Berry in Cannes for the film festival, the hottest star in town is Al Gore. READ MORE

Private lives are big news this week, with the New York Times devoting nearly 2,000 words and interviewing 50 people for a front page story on the state of Bill and Hillary Clinton's relationship. So in this journalistic spirit, I've decided to share with you something very private and very personal: It was a whirlwind relationship. From the moment we were introduced, we became close. Inseparable. Friends began to whisper that the relationship was taking up more and more of my time, energy, and focus. But I didn't realize how intense things had gotten until my constant companion was lost at sea and the grief set in...

To the mainstream media the big news of the week was the two big boys -- Bush and Blair -- meeting for their quarterly Lowering of the Bar. It was a gloomy affair -- obvious that both of them could barely muster the energy to spin their disastrous adventure in Iraq. And it was depressing watching the two most ostensibly powerful leaders in the world essentially throw up their hands and cross their fingers. But there's another story that shows that big-time leadership and change don't always have to begin and end with politicians. U2's Bono has just come back from Africa, where he's been devoting his considerable energy to the fights against AIDS, crushing poverty and debt, and the simple need for clean water.
