Miles protestan en centro de Washington mientras los militares sacan músculo
También se han producido numerosos arrestos en Nueva York tras una sentada ante residencia del alcalde.
Miles de manifestantes volvieron a congregarse este miércoles en Washington en una protesta pacífica por la violencia policial contra los afroamericanos, mientras decenas de agentes con vestimenta militar llegaban al centro en autobuses unas cuatro horas antes del toque de queda.
Una multitud mucho más numerosa que la del día anterior se congregó por la tarde en el centro de la capital, dividida en varios grupos por un nuevo perímetro de seguridad trazado por la Policía local alrededor de la Casa Blanca, pero sin la valla de más de dos metros que este martes les separaba de las fuerzas de seguridad.
Poco después de las 19.00 (23.00 GMT), llegaron media docena de autobuses blancos a los alrededores de la Casa Blanca, y de cada uno de ellos empezaron a bajar unos 50 soldados vestidos con uniforme militar de camuflaje y escudos antidisturbios.
Los manifestantes que estaban en la zona recibieron a los soldados con abucheos y les gritaron: ”¡Vergüenza!” y ”¿A quién protegen?”.
Una fuente del Pentágono dijo a Efe que no eran unidades en activo, sin ofrecer más detalles. La Guardia Nacional -un cuerpo de reservistas activado por la alcaldía de Washington para hacer frente a las protestas- anunció este martes que planeaban desplegar unos 1.500 efectivos más en la capital esta semana.
Además, el Pentágono informó este martes de que mantenía desplegados en los alrededores de Washington a 1.600 militares en activo por si fuera necesario enviarlos a la zona de las protestas, tras desplazarlos desde Carolina del Norte y Nueva York.
La alcaldesa de Washington, Muriel Bowser, retrasó el toque de queda de este miércoles hasta las 23:00 (03:00 GMT del jueves), después de dos días seguidos imponiéndolo a partir de las19:00.
Una hora antes del fin del toque de queda miles de personas todavía permanecían en el centro de Washington en las inmediaciones de la Casa Blanca en una manifestación que discurría pacíficamente, según pudo constatar Efe.
Los participantes en la protesta portaban pancartas con mensajes como “Sin justicia sin paz”, “Trump es un racista”, “Dejad de jodernos”, “Déjenlos respirar” o “Estoy orgullo de la ciudad de chocolate”, como se conoce a Washington DC.
La mayoría de los manifestantes eran jóvenes y afroamericanos, pero había gente de todas las edades y razas, como blancos, algún latino y asiáticos.
Tras el comienzo del toque de queda, todavía quedaban cientos de manifestantes en los alrededores de la Casa Blanca, sin que por el momento se hayan registrado altercados.
Por la tarde, uno de los grupos de manifestantes se había acercado hasta el hotel que la empresa del presidente estadounidense, Donald Trump, tiene en el centro de la ciudad, fuertemente protegido por las fuerzas de seguridad y que tenía algunas ventanas rotas en el primer piso, según el diario The Washington Post.
Frente al hotel, en la avenida Pensilvania, miles de personas se tendieron en el suelo durante varios minutos y corearon ”¡No puedo respirar!”, la misma frase que pronunció el afroamericano George Floyd la semana pasada, poco antes de morir por asfixia debido a la presión que ejercía sobre su cuello la rodilla de un policía blanco.
Mientras, un activista negro de 22 años, Seun Babalola, dio un discurso en otra zona de las protestas para anunciar la creación de un grupo, “Ciudadanos preocupados”, con el que pretende ayudar a canalizar y organizar mejor las protestas orgánicas que han surgido en la ciudad a raíz de la muerte de Floyd en Mineápolis (Minesota).
Numerosos arrestos en Nueva York
La policía de Nueva York efectuó este miércoles numerosos arrestos en varias zonas de la ciudad, empleándose con más contundencia en la zona de Brooklyn, una hora después de regir el toque de queda y tras una sentada a las puertas de la residencia oficial del alcalde, conocida como Gracie Mansion, en señal de repulsa por la muerte de George Floyd.
Ante la tercera noche en que varios miles de neoyorquinos desafiaron el toque de queda en una protesta contra el racismo, la policía decidió actuar esta vez con mayor dureza tras dar una hora de margen a los ciudadanos desde la entrada en vigor del toque de queda a las 8 de la tarde.
El propio jefe del departamento de Policía, Terence A. Monahan, admitió a los periodistas que el enfoque hoy era más agresivo para lograr dispersar rápidamente a los grupos de manifestantes. “Basta con la tolerancia”, dijo Monahan después de que las dos últimas noches Nueva York viviese bajo el caos y los saqueos. Eso ya no ocurrió hoy.
Las escenas más complicadas se registraron esta noche, tras el toque de queda, en Brooklyn, en los alrededores de la plaza Cadman, Fulton y Borough Hall, donde la policía actuó con contundencia, porrazos, balas de goma y gases lacrimógenos, con el objetivo de dispersar a los manifestantes y detener a numerosas personas en aplicación del toque de queda.
El accidentado final de la jornada en Brooklyn y Manhattan se produjo después de una larga jornada de pacíficas protestas por toda la ciudad en la que participaron miles de personas, entre las que destacó una silenciosa congregación a las puertas de la residencia del alcalde.
Delante de la vivienda reinó un silencio sepulcral durante más de 20 minutos a partir de las 7 de la tarde, interrumpido sólo por el piar de los pájaros de esta verde zona de Manhattan y el sonido de los omnipresentes helicópteros.
Se vivió además un momento surrealista en esta pacífica protesta, cuando todos los asistentes recibieron al mismo tiempo en sus móviles una alerta ciudadana enviada por las autoridades para recordar el toque de queda, un mensaje que produce un ruido estridente pero que fue completamente ignorado.
